“I’m glad I don’t have any bratty siblings,” Charlie sighed.

“Toby isn’t a brat,” Tracy flared. “Honestly, Charlie. You can be such a pain.”

“Yeah, but you love me anyway, eh, girlfriend?” Charlie drawled, batting her eyes.

Tracy didn’t know whether to be madder or to burst out laughing. That was the trouble with Charlie—she drove Tracy crazy but she had been her best friend since third grade.

“It’s kind of scary," Toby said. "I mean, I’ve known Jason ever since kindergarten. And now he says he’s been in the wrong body all this time.”

Tracy could see that Toby was really upset. Tears were starting to roll down his cheeks.

Well, he wasn’t the only one upset. Tracy was getting mad.

What kind of nonsense was Toby’s teacher saying that she would get a seven-year-old boy so confused? Hey, most kids knew the difference between boys and girls by the age of...

“But Jason is a boy,” Tracy broke in. “Toby told me that he’s seen his—you know—lots of times in the boys bathroom when they were going pee.”

Even though she had brothers, Tracy didn’t like to say the word penis out loud. It felt like a violation of privacy or modesty...

“Yeah, but Mom, all the kids say it’s just a relaxer. It makes you feel really mellow. And it’s not addictive.”

“False, false, and false,” her mom responded.

“What do you mean?” Tracy asked.

“First of all, from a medical standpoint—a physiological aspect—marijuana is not a relaxer. In fact, it’s just the opposite. It increases heart rate and blood pressure."

"Second, it doesn’t necessarily make a person mellow. Some people say they feel happy and peaceful when they smoke marijuana, but others have negative emotions like sadness or anxiety.

That’s because THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana...

“It’s just—well, it’s just—I told you about my brothers,” Zoe began.

 “Yes,” Mrs. McKenzie nodded.

“But I’m a girl!” Zoe blurted angrily.

“Absolutely,” Mrs. McKenzie murmured calmly.

Tracy was taken aback by Zoe’s sudden outburst, but her mother seemed unperturbed.

“It must be kind of tough being the only girl in such a gang of brothers, uh?” Mrs. McKenzie asked with a twinkle.

“But—but the thing is,  the school nurse says maybe I’m—I’m not.”

“Not what, Zoe?” Mrs. McKenzie prodded kindly.

“Not—not a girl,” Zoe sighed.

Chapter Forty-Eight

Josh already had his nose glued to his phone, ignoring her. He was back to being his usual annoying self, she sniffed peevishly.

“Nice to meet you, Tracy,” Brett nodded politely. “Have a seat.”

Tracy sat on the edge of the old leather sofa.

When Brett plopped down on the center cushion, the whole couch bounced. Brett didn’t seem to notice, though, as he was focused on his phone.

“Ah, you’re right, Josh. Montana!” he burst out,

leaning forward suddenly.

Tracy didn’t have a clue what they were talking about.

The boys seemed oblivious to her continued existence, which was fine...
